Is Your Jade Real? How to Tell Nephrite from Glass in 30 Seconds

March 31, 2026

You found a beautiful jade rosary online — the price was right, the photos looked gorgeous, and the listing said "genuine jade." It arrived, you held it, and something felt... off. It's lighter than you expected. The colour looks too perfect, too uniform.

You're not being paranoid — identifying genuine jade vs glass rosary beads is a real challenge. The word "jade" is one of the most abused terms in online retail. Sellers legally use it for nephrite (genuine), jadeite (genuine but different), serpentine (not jade), aventurine (not jade), dyed quartzite (definitely not jade), glass, and even resin.

Here are five tests you can do right now with no equipment. They take thirty seconds.

Test 1: The Temperature Test (Most Reliable)

MaterialWhat You Feel
Real nephriteDistinctly cold, 10-15 seconds to warm
GlassCold initially, warms in 5 seconds
Resin/plasticRoom temperature immediately
SerpentineSlightly cool, warms in 7-8 seconds

Test 2: The Weight Test

MaterialSpecific GravityFeel
Nephrite2.90–3.03Heavy for size
Jadeite3.30–3.38Even heavier
Glass2.40–2.80About right or light
Resin1.05–1.40Obviously light

Test 3: The Sound Test

  • Nephrite: Clear, resonant, bell-like "clink"
  • Glass: Sharp, higher-pitched "tink"
  • Resin: Dull "clack" — no resonance

Test 4: The Scratch Test

  • Nephrite (Mohs 6-6.5): Steel blade slides off, no mark
  • Glass (Mohs 5.5): Inconclusive
  • Resin (Mohs 2-3): Steel cuts easily — definitive fail

Test 5: The Light Test

  • Nephrite: Translucent edges, fibrous internal glow
  • Glass: Transparent, uniform, tiny bubbles = definitive
  • Resin: Plasticky translucence, no fibrous structure
  • Dyed stone: Colour concentrated in cracks

Why Fake Jade Exists (The Economics)

A genuine nephrite bead costs 2-5 EUR to carve. A glass copy costs 0.10-0.50 EUR. Sellers list fakes for 15-40 EUR labelled "natural jade" or "Grade A jade." The profit margin on fakes is enormous. Buy from sellers who disclose the exact stone type, origin, and testing.
